Milwaukee Preservation at Stake

In November a proposal was released to construct a 10-story, 200-room Marriott Hotel in Milwaukee’s downtown. The proposal made a strong case for the construction jobs and 200 permanent positions in the newly-constructed hotel, but standing in the way are five buildings in the East Side Commercial Historic District constructed between 1867 and 1926. Despite requests from the Historic Preservation Commission and the district’s alderman, developers insisted that it was not feasible to use the existing buildings for their hotel project nor were they interested in relocating the project to an already vacant lot nearby.
